Employing the Capture Success Matrix to wild hog trapping.

What is a key component to successful wild hog control? Trapping whole sounders.

What is necessary for successful wild hog trapping? Getting the whole sounder comfortable enough to remain inside the trap long enough to drop the gate.

The professionals at Jager Pro Hog Control Systems have named this process the Capture Success Matrix. This process is comprised of three components. They are:
  • 1. Conditioning the hogs to the bait site.
  • 2. Condition the hogs to the trap components.
  • 3. Capture the entire sounder with one gate drop.

In the video, you can see the Georgia Hog Cutters crew moving and adding panels to a hand-baited site on the edge of a peanut field. This is taking place after the hogs have been conditioned to the bait site. They have been returning to the location on a regular basis for food.

Several panels were introduced to the location, assembled in a loose arch around the bait. The hogs have become accustomed to the equipment, so the trap was partly assembled around the site, as you see in the video. Josey will leave the gate fixed in the open position, and leave the panel directly across from the gate (what we call the #12 panel) out.

Once the hogs are entering the gate and their body language tells us they are comfortable, the final panel or a 2nd gate will be put into place. From this point, we will watch the camera feed for all sounder members to enter and begin feeding. Then their luck will have run out.

The time involved in this process can vary. Factors like outside interference, weather and educational level of the hogs can impact the time investment.

The property in this photo is a family farm that has had significant wild hog damage. Through our efforts , there are 89 fewer hogs to cause damage next season. We have been engaged to provide year-round “pest control” services, and are currently conditioning a sounder of 12 to a bait site several fields away.
